Group Swim Lessons

Our Y recognizes that swimming is an important life skill for anyone at any age. Participating in swimming lessons at the Y builds self-confidence, gives both kids and adults the opportunity to have fun discovering what they can achieve, and incorporates water safety skills that one day could save a life. The Y offers classes for everyone and our trained instructors do their best to make sure everyone feels safe and successful in our program. The appropriate swimming group is chosen based on age and ability.

Parent & Child Swimming Lessons (Ages 6 months - 3 years)

It's important for parents to form reasonable and healthy expectations for their infant/toddler when it comes to swimming and water safety. At the Y, we use songs, games and activities to increase the level of trust between parents and their children in the water, creating a positive experience, while introducing basic aquatic safety precautions to both parent and child. Classes meet once a week for 30 minutes. (Ratio: 1 Instructor to 10 Infant/Child Pairs)

Preschool Swimming Lessons (Ages 3 years - 5 years)

In the Y's preschool aquatics program, children develop fundamental swimming skills that set the foundation for swimming to become a lifelong activity. Our progressive swimming program includes 4 levels of instruction using age appropriate activities to teach swimming and water safety skills. Classes meet once a week for 30 minutes. (Ratio: 1 Instructor to 5 Children)

  1. Pike - Beginner: Non-swimmer
  2. Eel - Advanced beginner: Non-swimmer, comfortably submerges face under water
  3. Ray - Intermediate: Comfortable in the water, almost swims independently
  4. Starfish - Advanced: Swims independently

Youth Swimming Lessons (Ages 6 years - 12 years)

Through a progression of 6 swimming levels, children develop the skills they need to become safe, strong, and proficient in the water. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes. (Polliwog - Minnow Ratio: 1 Instructor to 8 Children / Fish-Shark Ratio: 1 Instructor to 10 Children)

  1. Polliwog - Beginner: Non-swimmer
  2. Guppy - Advanced beginner: Comfortable in the water & cabable of swimming 20 feet
  3. Minnow - Intermediate: Swims independently, learning front & back crawl
  4. Fish - Advanced #1: Able to swim 20 yards front crawl & back crawl, learning elementary backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly
  5. Flying Fish - Advanced #2: Refining all strokes & building endurance
  6. Shark - Advanced #3: Proficient at all strokes, building endurance and learning turns

Teen & Adult Swimming Lessons (Ages 13 years & Older)

It’s never too late to learn. Lessons are available for every ability level, from the non-swimmer who is terrified of the water to the lap swimmer just looking to improve their strokes. Classes meet once a week for 45 minutes. (Ratio: 2 Instructors to 10 Adults)

Click here to view the upcoming or current program session and to learn how to register.

Private Swim Lessons

Looking for a more intense and individualized swimming lesson?

Private Lessons - Work one-on-one with one of our swimming instructors and schedule sessions around a more flexible schedule (30 minutes).

Semi Private Lessons - Its more fun to learn with a friend. Semi private lessons can be arranged for two swimmers of the same swimming ability.

Both private & semi private lessons can be arranged for either 30 minutes or 1 hour, however, the 1 hour lessons are only recommended for the more advanced swimmers looking to build endurance and focus on technique.

Please contact Danielle McAvinue (Aquatics Director) at 845 344 9622 ext. 253 or dmcavinue@middletownymca.org to make arrangements.

Base Camp & Get Started YMCA OF MIDDLETOWN

Base Camp was designed to provide a smaller more private space for personal training, small group trianing and individual members to enjoy a quiet workout in a less crowded space.

This room was also designed with the understanding that starting a fitness routine can be very difficult for new or returning health seekers. We want you to feel comfortable, confident and successful on your path to beginning a new healthier lifestyle so we’ve created a 9 week Get Started Program to help you set safe attainable fitness goals, create a balanced routine, and encourage you to work at your own pace with guidance and support from qualified fitness professionals.

What is the GET STARTED Program?

  • Weekly 45-minute sessions with an Exercise Coach in a small group following a 9 week lesson plan
  • Exercises begin slowly, safely and gradually increasing over the 9 weeks
  • Informational handouts on wellness and nutrition
  • Your exercise coach will closely monitor your attendance, provide support, motivation and encouragement while teaching you the basics of fitting activity into your lifestyle
  • All coaching sessions will be at the same time, on your selected day of the week
  • Sessions cannot be made up on an individual basis

MAKE THE COMMITMENT TO YOUR HEALTH TODAY!

This $25.00 program is available to YMCA Members only.

Aquacize

A CLASS FOR EVERY LIFESTYLE

Water exercise classes are beneficial to everyone regardless of age or ability and are especially beneficial to those suffering from arthritis, hip and leg injuries, or who find it difficult to exercise on dry land. The biggest benefit to exercising in the pool is the amount of body weight the water takes off joints, making exercising with arthritic bones or even minor injuries much more comfortable for the participant. Individuals with any health condition should consult a doctor before participating.

Our classes are available to YMCA Members only (age 13 & Older).
Please scroll down to learn more about our classes.

Aquacize with Nancy

This class has participants moving purposefully in the water and demonstrates how and why water exercise improves life outside the water. The class incorporates a cardiovascular workout to burn calories, yoga stretches to tone and strengthen muscles, as well as Ai Chi exercises to improve balance and promote relaxation.
Various types of equipment, such as noodles and weights, are utilized throughout the class. Participants leave “ENER-CHIZED”.

Aquacize with Patty

This is a great cardio workout especially beneficial for individuals suffering from arthritis, hip and leg injuries, or who are overweight and find it difficult to workout on dry land.

Aquacize with Angie

This heart pumping class is great for anyone. Angie combines cardio and muscle toning exercises in a high intensity workout. This is a great workout for the entire body. Each session ends with a few minutes of stretching.

Aquacize with Nina & Amy

Warning! This class will get your heart racing and every muscle in your body working. Come prepared to work those muscles you forgot you had. Nina keeps the class moving through a variety of cardiovascular and strength training exercises that keepyour pulse elevated through the entire class.

Aqua Zumba® with Isabelle

Lap Swim

During lap swim the pool is open to YMCA members who are capable of swimming continuously from one end of the pool to the other. Lap lanes can be split by 2 swimmers. If more than 3 swimmers are in any one lane those swimmers must circle-swim. The lifeguard on duty has full authority to create safe lap swimming lanes by organizing swimmers according to speed and ability. Swimmers who wish to do stationary exercise may use the slow lane if space is available.

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Do you love giving back to your community?

At the Y, there are so many ways you can help us make a positive impact on our community. Volunteer your time at one of our many charitable community events or make a donation that will give a family in need the opportunity to benefit from membership and childcare services provided by our YMCA. Either way, your help and generosity will allow us to provide invaluable services to our community.

STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY
ONE CHILD AT A TIME

2019 Strong Kids Campaign

Did you know that the Y is committed to making services available to all, regardless of their ability to pay?  The YMCA of Middletown has a history of over 130 years of helping those  who are most in need.  We are able to keep this commitment through the generosity of our members, local businesses and community donors who support our Strong Kids Campaign.

Strong Kids scholarship assistance allows us to dramatically change the lives of those who may not be able to pay for YMCA services. By contributing to our Strong Kids Campaign you will change the life of someone right here in your local community.

  • A child attends a quality after school program while their single parent works.
  • A senior citizen takes water exercise classes remaining active and healthy thereby remaining independent and living in their own home.
  • A child experiences a memorable summer day camp after losing a parent earlier that year.
  • A teen participates in the Y’s Youth and Government program and develops the courage to stand up in front of 450 peers to debate the merits of their proposed bill.

The YMCA does not receive ongoing governmental support, nor does it receive United Way funding, so we count on your support to our Strong Kids Campaign. Every year the YMCA provides over $200,000 of scholarship assistance in our local communities, thanks to the Strong Kids Campaign.

The overall goal for our 2019 Strong Kids Campaign is $155,000.
Please help us reach our goal.

HOW YOUR DOLLARS MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

$100A child receives a 1-year membership to the Y and participates in programs that build confidence and start them on the right track to a healthy lifestyle.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
FOR A GOOD CAUSE OR JUST BECAUSE

Throughout the year the Y hosts events that help strengthen our community, whether its a Family Night giving family members a place to bond or one of our annual races that promotes a healthy lifestyle, all of our events help us give back to the community. Proceeds from many of our events are contributed to our Annual Strong Kids Campaign which in turn helps the Y provide financial assistance for our programs and services while other events simply bring people together.
