COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuer program is to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over.
Please Note: This course is included in the Lifeguarding course and although it is a 2-year certification, Lifeguards must be recertified every year as per the Health Department.
Students must complete online learning and attend in-person skill session.
- Learn to recognize cardiac arrest and perform CPR and use an AED when acting as a single rescuer or two rescuers on adult, child or infant.
- Learn to demonstrate how to safely and effectively care for an obstructed airway for both a responsive and unresponsive adult, child or adult.
- Gain experience working as a team in a multiple rescuer response.

You must possess a current American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification and bring your current certification to class with you.

CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer Recertification at South Orange Family YMCA:
The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. The course includes the following certifications: Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid.
Please Note: Lifeguarding certification is valid for 2 years, however, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer must be recertified every year as per the Health Department.
Pre-Requisites
Must be 15 by the last day of the course.
Prior to registering for the Lifeguard Certification course, students must register and successfully complete a PRE-REQUISITE SWIM TEST prior to the start of the course (see details below). Upon successful completion of the swim test, the $25 registration fee will be credited towards the Lifeguard Certification course fee. The $25 test fee will NOT be refunded to those who do not pass the test.
The PRE-REQUISITE SWIM TEST includes:
* Swim 150 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, demonstrating good breath control, stop to tread for 2 minutes using legs only, swim 50 yards using the front crawl, breaststroke, or a combination of both, climb out without using the steps or ladder.
* Timed Event in 1 minute 40 seconds: Swim 20 yards to the deep end, submerge 7ft to retrieve 10 pound object, swim back holding object in both hands with face out of water, exit the water without using steps or ladder.
* Swim 20 yards on your back with the object in your hand
All classes must be attended (NO EXCEPTIONS).

The purpose of the Waterfront Skills module is to teach lifeguards the skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to emergencies in nonsurf, open-water areas found at public parks, resorts, summer camps and campgrounds.
Must bring a copy of your current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification to the first class and successfully complete the following swim test:
* Swim 350 yards continuously using front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, stop to tread for 2 minutes using legs only, swim 200 yards, climb out without using the steps or ladder.
* Timed Event in 1 minute 40 seconds: Swim 20 yards to the deep end, submerge 7ft to retrieve 10 pound object, swim back holding object in both hands with face out of water, exit the water without using steps or ladder.
* Underwater swim: Swim 5 yards, submerge and retrieve 3 dive rings and swim back with the rings.
