WHERE KIDS PLAY & EXCEL
BEFORE, DURING & AFTER SCHOOL

The YMCA of Middletown continues to follow all state and local health department guidelines to implement the safest childcare protocols possible in our Club Kid program. The Y also works with each school district's administrators to ensure our program meets the unique needs of each district.

Club Kid provides safe, fun, and supervised care before and after school at numerous elementary schools in Orange County. This year, we have made a Full Day option available at our Middletown location for students from any school district during remote learning. The Full Day program may also be available on-site in some school districts. (Please scroll down to see the details for Club Kid in your child's school district.)

Club Kid serves children in grades K-5, however, the Monroe-Woodbury School District provides the program for K-8. Each Club Kid program follows their school district’s calendar. Club Kid is registered and licensed by the New York State Office of Child and Family Services (OCFS).

The Y strives to provide an exciting and stimulating environment, giving children the opportunity to make activity choices that best suit their individual needs and interests while encouraging personal growth, socialization, and an appreciation for diversity. The YMCA Core Values of CARING, RESPECT, HONESTY, and RESPONSIBILITY are reflected in all that we do.

The AM Club Kid program helps children start the day right with activities such as arts and crafts, games, and quiet time for last-minute school projects. In the PM Club Kid program children have the opportunity to participate in activities; snack, homework time, arts and crafts, outside play, gym time, and other special events to create a diverse afternoon full of FUN.

Group Swim Lessons

The Y recognizes that swimming is an important life skill for anyone at any age. Participating in swimming lessons at the Y builds self-confidence, gives both kids and adults the opportunity to have fun discovering what they can achieve, and incorporates water safety skills that one day could save a life. Our trained instructors do their best to make sure everyone feels safe and  is successful in our program. Lessons are divided into three stages: Swim Starters, Swim Basics, and Swim Strokes.

SWIM STARTERS:

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence building experiences, while parents learn about
water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Parent & Child (6-36 Months) = PC A OR B

  • PC A (Ages 6-18 Months): Water Discovery - Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.
  • PC B (Ages 19-36 Months): In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

SWIM BASICS:

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:
1. Swim, float, swim—sequencing front glide, roll, back float, roll, front glide, and exit
2. Jump, push, turn, grab

Preschool (3-5 Years) = PS 1-3
School Age (6-12 Years) = SA 1-3
Teen/Adult (13+ Years) = T/A 1-3

  • 1 / WATER ACCLIMATION (PS 1 , SA 1, T/A 1): Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.
  • 2 / WATER MOVEMENT (PS 2 , SA 2, T/A 2): In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change,
and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
  • 3 / WATER STAMINA (PS 3 , SA 3, T/A 3): In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

SWIM STROKES:

Having mastered the fundamentals, students learn additional water safety skills and build stroke technique, developing skills that prevent chronic disease, increase social-emotional and cognitive well-being, and foster a lifetime of physical activity

Preschool (3-5 Years) = PS 4
School Age (6-12 Years) = SA 4-6
Teen/Adult (13+ Years) = T/A 4-6

  • 4 / STROKE INTRODUCTION (PS 4 , SA 4, T/A 4):Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.
  • 5 / STROKE DEVELOPMENT (PS 5 , SA 5, T/A 5): Students in stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.
  • 6 / STROKE MECHANICS (PS 6 , SA 6, T/A 6): In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

  • PC A (Ages 6-18 Months): Water Discovery – Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration

TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Do you love giving back to your community?

At the Y, there are so many ways you can help us make a positive impact on our community. Volunteer your time at one of our many charitable community events or make a donation that will give a family in need the opportunity to benefit from membership and childcare services provided by our YMCA. Either way, your help and generosity will allow us to provide invaluable services to our community.

STRENGTHENING OUR COMMUNITY
ONE CHILD AT A TIME

2019 Strong Kids Campaign

Did you know that the Y is committed to making services available to all, regardless of their ability to pay?  The YMCA of Middletown has a history of over 130 years of helping those  who are most in need.  We are able to keep this commitment through the generosity of our members, local businesses and community donors who support our Strong Kids Campaign.

Strong Kids scholarship assistance allows us to dramatically change the lives of those who may not be able to pay for YMCA services. By contributing to our Strong Kids Campaign you will change the life of someone right here in your local community.

  • A child attends a quality after school program while their single parent works.
  • A senior citizen takes water exercise classes remaining active and healthy thereby remaining independent and living in their own home.
  • A child experiences a memorable summer day camp after losing a parent earlier that year.
  • A teen participates in the Y’s Youth and Government program and develops the courage to stand up in front of 450 peers to debate the merits of their proposed bill.

The YMCA does not receive ongoing governmental support, nor does it receive United Way funding, so we count on your support to our Strong Kids Campaign. Every year the YMCA provides over $200,000 of scholarship assistance in our local communities, thanks to the Strong Kids Campaign.

The overall goal for our 2019 Strong Kids Campaign is $155,000.
Please help us reach our goal.

BRINGING PEOPLE TOGETHER
FOR A GOOD CAUSE OR JUST BECAUSE

Throughout the year the Y hosts events that help strengthen our community, whether its a Family Night giving family members a place to bond or one of our annual races that promotes a healthy lifestyle, all of our events help us give back to the community. Proceeds from many of our events are contributed to our Annual Strong Kids Campaign which in turn helps the Y provide financial assistance for our programs and services while other events simply bring people together.
