Y Leaders Club

LEADERS IN THE MAKING

The Y Junior Leaders and Teen Leaders Clubs provide a safe haven for local youth and teens to engage in positive activities under the guidance of adult supervisors and mentors who help them become confident and contributing members of the community.

Activities include attending weekly meetings, developing club goals and activities, fund-raising and attending annual youth leader-ship rallies and leaders school along other YMCA Youth Leaders Clubs.

Y Junior Leaders Club

Ages 10 to 12
In Y Junior Leaders Club, preteens learn to make a difference in the community by working together to plan and implement service activities. The club also volunteers at YMCA special events and receives mentoring from the members of the Y Teen Leaders Club.

Y Teen Leaders Club

Ages 13-17
In Y Teen Leaders Club, teens work closely with their peers and YMCA staff to develop their own individual leadership style through the planning and organizing of service projects, character building activities, and social & recreational programming.

GET IN THE GAME

Our YMCA offers a variety of both instructional and competitive sports programs. Infants and toddlers develop motor skills in our parent and child programs. Instructional classes introduce youth and teens to a variety of sports and lay the foundation for a commitment to an active lifestyle or passion for a specific sport. Our competitive teams further develop young athletes into varsity and collegiate level athletes.

Weekend Warriors

For children ages 8-12, each date is a different challenge but its not just the winning team or the MVP who’ll win a prize. Kids also have the opportunity to win t-shirts and other prizes for demonstrating the most sportsmanship or team leadership and winning various skill competitions throughout the season. The 2018-2019 Weekend Warriors Program wraps up in May with an awards ceremony where trophies will be awarded for season accomplishments.

PLAY DATE

Parents can enjoy a night out to themselves, while their kids have fun, in a safe, secure environment. Kids, 3-9 years old, will enjoy an evening of fun and games including art projects, gym/sports activities, games, pizza and snacks.

This program is offered the first and third Friday of each month from 6:30pm-9:30pm.

Pre-registration is requested in person by noon on the day of the event. $7 for Members, $15 Program Members. Members click here to register.

Love the Arts? – Sing, Play and Perform with the Y and its many classes!

Stage Drama

Develop the social skills and confidence needed to enhance dramatic performances.

Choir

Join the Y’s choir! Learn vocal performance, harmony, music theory and perform at community events.
Note: Participants must commit to fundraise through ticket sales.

Dance

Express yourself through movement and music through hip-hop, jazz, ballet and other dance styles.

Instrumental Ensemble

This program is for experienced musicians of any level and with any instrument. Bring your instument and your music stand, and together the group will inspire the community through their music.

Music Appreciation

Enter the world of music with this introduction to
music theory,vocal performance and basic instruments
such as bells, kazoos, recorders and other percussion instruments.

Intro to Studio

Recording and making your own music. Learn the basics of engineering a studio recording session, while making and recording your own music. Class maximum of 6 participants.

Violin – Group Lessons

Master the fundamentals of playing the violin. Please bring your own violin.

Percussion

Learn to play African Drums and other percussion instruments in a gorup. Children and adults are encouraged to participate – what a great way to spend time together as a family. Drumming involves memory and relieves stress.

Host your own party at the South Orange Family YMCA.
Parties are held on Saturdays & Sundays.
Choose from our birthday party packages to fit your interests.
We host parties for ages 3 and older (including adults).
A Birthday Party Host will  assist you in decorating and organizing the party.
Parties must be booked two weeks in advance and are subject to availability.

Youth & Government

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITIES WITH TEEN ADVOCACY

The New York State YMCA Youth & Government Program provides high school teens with the opportunity to use their
thoughts, voices and actions to make a change. The program is dedicated to teaching young people to use the democratic
process to affect change that has an impact on their individual communities and around the State.

This is a great opportunity to test problem solving and communication skills. Attend a State Conference in Albany with teens

American Red Cross Courses

The YMCA of Middletown is an Authorized Provider for the American Red Cross.
Every year, dozens of teens and adults learn to save lives through our First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding classes.

Lifeguarding


The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is to provide entry-level lifeguard participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services (EMS) personnel take over. Course Length: 26 hours

Prerequisites

  • Must be 15 years old on or before the final scheduled session of this course.
  • Swim 300 yards continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs.
  • Complete a timed event within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
    • Starting in the water, swim 20 yards.
    • Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object.
    • Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object. Exit the water without using a ladder or steps. Swim goggles are not allowed.

Lifeguarding Recertification’s

  • You must be currently certified
  • Your certification must be Red Cross
  • CPR & AED are included in this class

Lifeguard Instructor

Take your Lifeguard Trainig to the next level and become a certified instructor so you can teach others to save lives. Course Length: 24 hours

This course will certify you to teach:

  • Lifeguarding
  • Lifeguard Blended Learning
  • Shallow Water Lifeguarding
  • Waterpark Skills
  • Administering Emergency Oxygen
  • Blood borne Pathogens Training
  • CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers & Health Care Providers

Prerequisites

  • 17 years old on or before the last day of the instructor course.
  • Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED certificate or equivalent from another organization.
  • Successful completion of the Online Session for the Lifeguarding Instructor course.
  • Successful completion of the Pre-course Session.
  • Obtain course materials before starting the first classroom session of the instructor course.

Water Safety with Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT)

Take your Lifeguard Trainig to the next level and become a certified instructor so you can teach others to save lives. Course Length: 24 hours

To train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue and Personal Water Safety courses, six levels of Learn-to-Swim, three levels of Preschool Aquatics and two levels of Parent and Child Aquatics. Course Length: 35 hours

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 16 years of age on or before the last day of the instructor course
  • Successfully complete the precourse session.

CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers

The purpose of the American Red Cross CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and Health Care Providers program is to train professional-level rescuers to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults, children and infants until more advanced medical personnel take over. Course Length: 6 hours

First Aid

This program teaches skills that participants need to know to give immediate care to a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. Course length: 3 hours

Prerequisites

None

Babysitting Course

To provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic childcare and basic first aid. Course length: 6 hours

Prerequisites

None – Recommended age 11–15 years.
