ABOUT OUR Y

The YMCA of Middletown is a community based organization dedicated to putting Judeo– Christian principles into practice through programs that build spirit, mind and body for all.

Our YMCA Association is built upon a proud tradition of strengthening the communities of Greater Middletown for more than 125 years. Our incorporated name however, YMCA of Middletown, doesn’t tell the full story of just how far-reaching the impact of our Y has been. For instance, for decades now much of the lesser-known areas of our work has been done outside the walls of our main hub, the Middletown YMCA (located at 81 Highland Avenue) which has served as our home for over 75 years.

As you see on virtually every page on this website, the YMCA has three primary areas of focus:  Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility.  Every program or class we offer, every teen initiative we launch, and each fundraiser we organize is intended to make a positive impact in one or more of these critical areas. With the help of some very important local partners we have expanded our reach across Orange County and into Sullivan County as well.

We currently operate 18 school-based before and after-school programs in Orange County. Our Club Kid program serves hundreds of children daily in school districts such as Pine Bush, Minisink Valley, Port Jervis and Monroe-Woodbury.

Early in 2007 our YMCA Board of Directors voted to establish a new branch in neighboring Sullivan County. Thanks to a partnership with the Monticello Central School District, and the support of volunteers and public officials, the YMCA of Sullivan County opened a satellite Wellness Center in the Monticello High School in November of that year. Membership and programming there have grown steadily and the Y continues to forge other strategic partnerships in the county such as with the Town of Thompson.

On February 5, 2011, our YMCA celebrated another historic achievement in the region when we opened the doors to the South Orange Family YMCA or ‘SOFY’ as we affectionately call it. Located at 45 Gilbert Street Extension in Monroe, this 23,000 square foot building is the culmination of years of planning and months of construction, inspired by a vision to bring a true community center and family center to southern Orange County.

Our YMCA Association doesn’t just look at statistics to measure the extent of our community impact.  We focus on the depth of the impact we make on each child, on each family and in each community we serve.  With that being said, the following numbers tell the story of just how far-reaching our programs and services are.

Presently the YMCA of Middletown Association serves:

  • 11,000 Youth, Teen and Adult Members in 4 locations.
  •  955 Children in our Club Kid before- and after-school programs across 18 school-based sites.
  •  450 Children per day in three Summer Day Camps.
  •  200 Teens attending our Beat the Streets program on Saturday evenings - expanding to serve the greater Monroe area in summer 2011.
  •  1,000 Children in high-quality Aquatics programs.
  •   Hundreds of Families who participate in our Family Fun Night programs.
  •   2,500 Children and adults who attend our Family Fall Festivals in Middletown and Monticello.
  •   Dozens of local residences for people with disabilities through physical programming at the Y.
